A black mold test will determine the presence of toxic black mold in your home which may pose a health risk. Black-mold test kits are available you can perform yourself.

Black Mold Test Kit

If you want to avoid the cost of hiring a mold inspection service, you can purchase a mold test kit. Companies like Quicktox and Mold Check sell do-it-yourself test kits. These kits offer the same methods (surface and air testing) that inspection services use.

They also provide the supplies to take samples of the suspected mold and test it for toxic strains like Stachybotrys & Aspergillus-Niger. The Quicktox kit allows for results of a surface sample after a few minutes. The Mold Check kit asks you to mail samples for laboratory identification.

CDC and Mold Identification

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it is not necessary to identify the type of mold present. This is because allergies are the most common side effect of mold growth and individual susceptibility to mold may vary, especially considering the amount present. There are no standards for acceptable levels of mold. Therefore, the CDC recommends any mold present be removed and steps taken to prevent its return.
