Add a Diverter Valve for a Septic Tank
A diverter valve in a septic system is used to divert the waste from one drain field to the other. The principles of a diverter valve in this scenario is very similar to that of a diverter valve that is used in common household applications such as showerheads. If you have more than one drain field or leech field, then you may want to consider adding a diverter valve to your septic system. Below are instructions on how to accomplish this project.
Step 1 - Turn off Electricity
Turn off the electricity to the entire house. You can do this by either shutting off the main supply source on the circuit breaker panel or disconnecting the fuse box. You never want to attempt any type of septic repair or addition without shutting down the electricity.
Step 2 - Get Prepared
Put on a pair of old clothes or work clothes. Pull out a pair of rubber gardening gloves and put on a pair of goggles. This can be a messy job, because you never know what refuse you will run into when you add a diverter valve.
Step 3 - Locate the Septic Tank Piping
Every system is designed and installed differently. Either pull out your diagrams or check the manufacturer's installation information on where your source piping can be found on the septic system.
Step 4 - Remove Piping
On the septic system, there should be piping that runs into the pump. When the refuse enters the pumping station, it will pump the refuse out into the pipes. The pipes lead to somewhere in your gardens and your lawns. You will need to remove the piping you find connected. Some piping can be removed with a wrench and other piping will need a screwdriver and a hammer to tap it off.
As you remove the piping, be sure to label each pipe. For example, if one pipe goes to your garden and another pipe leads to the back fields, you will want to make note of it.
Step 5 - Add the Diverter
Screw the diverter into the pump of your septic system. The diverter valve should be tightened with a wrench. Add a clamp onto the diverter valve, specifically where it meets the septic system.
Step 6 - Add the Piping
Reattach the piping to the different locations on the diverter valve.
Note: You may use a 2-way or a 3-way diverter valve, depending on the number of locations you would like to distribute your septic discharge to.
Step 7 - Close the System
Turn the diverter valve to the desired direction (pick any of the two or three locations). Close up the septic tank and the lid.
Step 8 - Turn on Electricity
Head back to the electrical panel and turn on the electricity to the house.
Step 9 - Check System
Check on the system periodically throughout the next couple of days to make sure it is functioning correctly.
