Adding a Vent to Mobile Home Roofing

Adding a vent to mobile home roofing can be installed by following the procedures for a regular roof installation. Installing a vent to a mobile home roof has some advantages to other types of roofs. The process, tools and materials for this job are described below.

If you are intending to do this project, employ an assistant to help you with the installation.

Step 1: Rent a Dumpster

For this project you need to rent a dumpster in order to toss the old roofing materials into. This can be rented in most communities from the waste collection department. Be sure to have the dumpster delivered and placed in an area of your yard, under tarps that makes it easier to catch the loose materials that you remove from the roof.

Step 2: Climb on the Roof

You will need a ladder that is tall enough to allow you to easily climb on your roof to remove the existing shingles. This ladder should be inspected to make sure that it is durable enough to accommodate your weight and allow you to accomplish this task.

Climb on the ladder and get on the roof with a hoe or shovel that you will need to remove the roofing materials.

Step 3: Take Apart the Roof

Use the shovel or hoe to remove the roofing material. Work carefully when at the edge of the roof to prevent any injury or harm to yourself. You should wear safety glasses while you work since a lot of loose material will be flying toward you. The material should be tossed into a waste receptacle below you while you work.

Step 4: Remove all Nails and Loose Material

You will need to get on your knees and remove all of the loose nails and other materials that is remaining on the roof. This is a tedious process that will take time and require you to carefully go over every inch of the roof. Throw the loose material away in the dumpster.

Step 5: Install Tar Paper

Roll out tar paper on the roof. This will act as a barrier to keep water from leaking through the roof. The tar paper will be affixed to the roof using a staple gun.

Step 6: Attach the Roof Shingles and Vent

Working in rows attach the Gambrel roof shingles to the roof. The shingles should have a lip or attachment that will allow you to nail them down on a nailer strip that you installed over the tar paper. Work carefully to attach the entire row before moving on to the next.

With the foam roof shingles in place, attach the vent and other elements of the roof to complete this project.
