Adding Blackout Drapes in 5 Steps
Blackout drapes can be a useful addition to several different rooms in your house. They are most useful in media rooms, living rooms and in bedrooms. While blackout drapes are manufactured slightly different from other fabric drapes, their installation is still basically the same.
Step #1 – Measure the Space
The first step is to measure the area that you want to cover with your blackout drapes. This space will have a vertical dimension and a horizontal dimension. You will want to measure from four inches above your window all the way to the floor for the vertical dimension in a media room or a living room, and you will want to measure from four inches above the window to just below the window sill for the vertical dimension of a bedroom. The width measurement will be the distance from edge of the window to the other plus four inches. This will give you a two inch margin on both sides of your window to ensure that all of the light from the window is blacked out.
Step #2 – Select Your Blackout Curtains
The next step is to select the blackout curtains for your room. You will need to select curtains and drapes that have the dimensions that you are interested in, as well as the color and fabric options that will compliment your room’s décor.
Step #3 – Buy Your Hanging Hardware
In order to install your blackout drapes you will need the right hanging hardware. This will usually include a curtain rod, screws and brackets. Usually all of these pieces come together in a single package, however, this is not always the case. You need to read the packaging from the curtain rod that you purchase to ensure that it is the right length for your blackout drapes and to learn what hanging hardware you need to purchase separately.
Step #4 – Install the Curtain Rod
To install the curtain rod you will need to first mark where the hardware needs to be screwed into place. This can be done by using a tape measure to find the center point of the top window sill. Mark this point with a pencil. Then measure up four inches and make another mark. Move your tape measure over to the edge of the window sill and measure up four inches and make another mark. Divide the length of the curtain rod by two. Use a yard stick and the two marks to create a straight line from the center point of your window. This is where the end of the curtain rod needs to be positioned and where you will install the curtain rod hanger. Repeat the process for the other side of the window.
Step #5 – Install Your Blackout Drapes
To hang your blackout drapes you will need to attach them to your curtain rod. This will be done by sliding the blackout curtain pocket over the curtain rod or by attaching the curtain’s hooks onto the rod. You can then install the curtain rod by setting it on top of the curtain rod hooks or by slipping it into the grooves in the hanging hardware depending on what type of hanging hardware you purchased.
