Asphalt Roll Roofing Installation
If you want to fit some asphalt onto the surface of your roof in order to protect it from water, then you should consider installing asphalt roll roofing, which is the most convenient and easiest way of fitting the asphalt by yourself. You can have someone come over and install the asphalt, but this is expensive, and the results might not be as satisfactory as doing it yourself. There are a few ways in which you can install this asphalt roll roofing yourself, but the best method would be to purchase it in a large roll, and then fit it on a dry day before the heavy rains begin.
Step 1 - Order Your Asphalt Roll
In order to fit the asphalt roll to your roof, you need to purchase it in the right quantities. Measure each of the parts of the roof and then calculate how many rolls it would take to fit each part. When you know how long each part of the roof is, you can cut your pieces to size. Typically, rolls cost $30 to $100 per square foot.
Step 2 - Install Your Starter Strip
Take a small piece from the asphalt roll roofing, and apply a layer of caulking to the eaves of the roof. You should then place the strip along the edge of the roof. Press down hard with the brush in order to fix the roll to the roof. When you have finished this, leave it to dry. Once it is firmly fixed onto the roof, apply a row of nails at regular intervals along the strip, enough to hold it in place even during wet weather.
Step 3 - Place the Course
Once your starter strip is installed, you need to place the course around it. This has to be laid onto the starter strip, and then nailed onto the roof with two rows of roofing nails. These nails should be around 12-14 inches from the top of the course, and there should be 5 inches between one nail and the next.
Step 4 - Add Cement Caulking
Once the course has been installed, take your cement caulking, and apply a thin, even layer to the top of the roof. The cement should form a tight seal over the edges of the roof. Leave this to partially dry so that it is slightly sticky when you add the asphalt roof.
Step 5 - Add the Roofing
Next, take the roll of roofing, and lay it out upon the roof. You may need a friend to hold out the roll while you stand on a stepladder and lay the material in place, taking care to overlap the edges by around 5 or 6 inches. Take your nails, and nail down all the parts of the roll, ensuring that all nails are at least an inch from the edge of the roof. Seal over any overlaps, and leave to dry.
