Here is a basic guide to bedroom soundproofing to limit the noise level to and from your bedroom. You generally implement bedroom soundproofing if you want to reduce the noise coming into your room and to help you sleep better at night, especially if you live in a rather noisy environment. People also provide soundproofing because they have a music studio or home theater system in their bedrooms.
What Bedroom Soundproofing Is
Soundproofing is the general method of isolating sound from moving into or out of a particular space or room. It is different from installing acoustics in the room to dampen the sound and control the room’s frequency spectrum. If you need to soundproof your room, separate it from the source of noise. A room cannot be fully soundproofed, however, as sound can enter or leave the room directly or indirectly. For instance, an air gap is direct sound transfer; a vibrating medium such as windows is indirect sound transfer. Therefore one of the best methods for soundproofing is creating a double wall with air gap in between, although this method is rather an expensive choice.
To make this more inexpensive, you can modify the bedroom soundproofing activity by sealing windows, doors and any other gaps with a weatherproofing foam tape. Using thick wood or curtains also helps soundproof and minimize or eliminate the air gap from the windows.
Simple Soundproofing by Renovating the Walls
Another possible way to soundproof the room is to remove and reinstate your drywall. You can begin removing the drywall and replacing it with soundproof materials. If your walls were previously soundproofed but have chipped away with age, you can repair them. Remove the interior of the drywall and pack the insulation batting in. The insulation batting blocks the sound, and the thicker it is, the more sound it will block. Remember not to tightly block the insulation, as this will lessen the insulation power of the material.
Finally, to fully expand the insulation on your drywall, you may pump the space inside with a special pumping machine. You can rent this type of machine from a local store that sells home improvement and DIY construction materials, or perhaps you may even hire a professional to do it for you. And if there are holes left on your drywall after you have inserted the soundproofing materials, repair the holes as soon as possible or patch them up. There are several patching kits sold in construction stores as well.
