Build A Natural Stone Fireplace For Your Home

Natural stone fireplaces are striking and attractive. These long-lasting structures will upgrade the look of your home and its enjoyability. The use of natural stone adds a majestic touch to your fireplace design, creating a luxurious feel on cold winter nights.
There are many options for natural stone for you to choose from. Depending on the color scheme of your décor and the style of your home and furnishings, you can find a natural stone that works for you. Research the different kinds of naturals stones and decide on one that you like.
Step 1
After deciding what size you want the mantel of your fireplace to be, outline the dimensions in the painter’s tape on the wall. Also, outline on the floor how long you want the mantel to extend.
Step 2
Take your sheets of metal lath and cut them to the dimensions of the marked-off areas. One sheet should be cut to the dimensions marked by the painter’s tape on the wall and the other sheet should be cut to match the area on the floor.
Nail the cut sheets to the wall and floor and remove the painter’s tape. The metal lath will serve as a base for the mortar.
Step 3
Decide whether you want to cut the stones so that they fit flush against the wall. If you do, use your masonry saw to cut the stones and put them aside.
Step 4
Once the metal lath is in place, mix the mortar. Apply mortar to a stone and then put the stone in place at the bottom left corner of the mantel. Next, apply another stone to the bottom right corner of the mantel. Now you have to points of reference for your first row of stones. Add the stones by starting on one side and moving to the other. Create horizontal rows.
As you position each stone, apply generous layers of mortar with your trowel. You should also add mortar in between the stones by using your hand to fill in any cracks or gaps.
Step 5
If the metal lath is visible around the edges of your new fireplace, cover it with grout. Wipe off any excess mortar with a damp cloth, and then allow the mortar to dry for at least 48 hours.
