Build a Trellis Gate in 10 Steps

What You'll Need
Power drill
2 inch deck screws
1 1/4 deck screws
Tape measure
3 vertical lattice pieces measuring 3/4 by 2-1/2 by 72
4 horizontal lattice pieces measuring 3/4 by 1-1/2 inches cut from a 1-by-2-by-8 foot board
1 horizontal lattice piece measuring 3/4 by 1-1/2 inches cut from a 1-by-2-by-10 foot board
3 bottom supports measuring 3/4 by 3-1/2 by 15-1/8 inches cut from a 1-by-4-by-4 foot board
A trellis gate takes only a few hours to build and it also provides a beautiful way to grow plants and vegetables.

Step 1-Cut all the wood to size

Measure all the wood and mark it. Then cut the wood to the sizes listed in the “things you will need” section with a table saw. You may also use a radial saw.

Step 2-Drill

Along the edge of each side of the garden box where the front and sides connect, drill three pilot holes.

Step 3-Screw

Screw the sides, back and front of the box together using the 2 inch deck screws.

Step 4-Attaching

Attach the bottom panels onto the box. Secure front and back panels  with the eight 2 inch deck screws. Secure the left and right side panels with six 2 inch deck screws. A 1/8 inch space should remain between the bottom pieces. This allows moisture to escape.

Step 5-Align and Secure

Line up the lower and upper panels of the box. Set the upper panel on the top of the box. Secure two 1 ¼ inch deck screws into each piece to attach the corner pieces. The smaller pieces go on the left and right sides and the wider pieces go on the back and front of the box.

Step 6-Support system

To attach the bottom supports to the underside of the box, use the 1 1 /4 inch deck screws. To hide them from view, the two outside pieces should be placed ½ inch away from the ends of the box. In the two corners, place the vertical pieces on the back of the box. Use the 1 ¼ inch deck screws to attach the top and bottom pieces to the box.

Step 7-Centerpiece

Using two 1 ¼ inch deck screws, stand the third piece in the center of the box and screw it into place. Place the center piece square into the box.

Step 8-Vertical Pieces

Mark and measure the vertical pieces. They need to be ½ inch away from the top and then every 11 inches along the piece.

Step 9-Horizontal Pieces

For the trellis, cut the horizontal pieces. They overhang the vertical lattice pieces by 1 ½ inches.

Step 10-Finishing Up

Using the 1 ¼ inch deck screws, attach the horizontal pieces. One screw should be used for each vertical piece in order to secure it tightly.
