It is possible to build an inexpensive queen platform bed that is both visually appealing and sturdy. Building a platform bed yourself can save a great deal of money versus purchasing a queen platform bed at a furniture store. This project does not require prior knowledge about woodworking or furniture building, requires minimal time and effort and uses inexpensive and easy to locate materials.
Step 1 – Cut Boards
The first step in building a queen bed is to cut your 2x4-inch boards to the proper length to fit a queen mattress. Using your power saw, you need to cut two of your 2x4-inch boards to a length measuring 76 ¾ inches. Next, you need to cut two more of your boards to a length measuring 60 inches and then cut three of your boards to a length measuring 56 ¾ inches.
Step 2 – Create the Frame
Now you can assemble the cut boards to form the bed frame. You need to lay out the cut boards, on their narrow side, to form a rectangle by laying out two of the 60-inch boards across from each other at the top and bottom of the frame and two of the 76 ¾-inch boards across from each other at either side. Using your drill, secure all four of the boards together by securing a screw into each corner of the frame. Once this is complete, you should have a secured outer frame structure.
Step 3 – Install Support Boards
Now you are ready to install the supporting cross bars. Place one of the 56 ¾-inch boards inside the frame 20 inches above the bottom of the frame on its narrow side. Now lay another of the 56 ¾-inch boards inside the frame 20 inches above the first support board. This should have it located in the middle of the frame and lay flat on its widest side. Finally, lay the last of the 56 ¾-inch boards inside the frame 20 inches above the middle board, resting on its narrow side. Now, secure all three of these boards to the frame using your drill and screws.
Step 4 – Create the Legs
Now you are ready to install legs onto the frame. You need to cut your four-by-four inch board into four pieces, measuring 1 ½ feet in length each. Now, place one 4x4-inch piece at each of the four corners of the frame. Secure these legs to the bed frame using your drill and screws.
Step 5 – Create the Top
Now you are ready to create the top of the bed frame. Turn the entire frame assembly over and lay both of the 4x8-foot plywood pieces onto the frame and secure to the frame using your drill and screws placing screws every 12 inches around the perimeter of each board.
Step 6 – Customize
Now you are finished. If you wish, you can further customize your frame by attaching any headboard or footboard you like.
