Building a Toilet Paper Magazine Rack for Your Bathroom

To organize time spent in the bathroom, some companies are manufacturing the toilet paper magazine rack. However, some of these racks can cost a lot of money, depending on the materials used. Nonetheless, you can make your own rack from scratch. All you need are some basic tools and materials, time, and patience.

Materials

  • 4-feet of 1-by-12 inch Pine
  • Spring loaded Toilet Paper Holder
  • 5/8 inch Drywall Screws
  • Varnish, Clear Spray Enamel or Paint
  • Sandpaper
  • Tape Measure
  • Screwdriver
  • Circular Saw
  • Drill and Drill Bits
  • Work Bench

Step 1: Planning

Although it may seem like a simple task, building a toilet paper magazine rack will still require some planning. First, determine where you will be placing the apparatus, how high up the wall it should go and how much space it will take up. It is recommended that you follow the dimensions 17.5 inches for the height, 11.5 inches for width and make it 3 inches deep.

Step 2: Cutting the Pieces

To make things simple, the toilet paper magazine rack only has seven pieces to put together. Start by cutting the wood at 17.5 inches in length. This will be for the back portion. Then cut a piece 10 inches long for the front portion. For the sides, cut three 2-by-10 inch pieces. Lastly, for the two toilet paper brackets, cut two pieces at 5 by 3 inches. After making these cuts from your wood, you will still have about a foot of wood left to spare.

Step 3: Cutting and Drilling

Round the corners of the back panel of the toilet paper magazine rack with the circular saw. Next, make a mock fitting of all the parts (front, rear, sides and bottom) and mark the points of connection. Drill the appropriate holes on the marks that you made and make sure that they are aligned precisely. Do not forget to drill holes at the back portion of your toilet paper magazine rack where you will drive in the screws to attach to your wall. Make four holes about 1-inch from the corners. Next, drill the corresponding holes in your bathroom wall. Drill holes for the spring-loaded paper holder, but don’t drill all the way through; about half an inch of depth will do. If you have tile, be sure you drill in between the tiles, and not on the tiles themselves, to avoid cracking them.

Step 4: Piecing the Parts Together

Assemble all the parts of the toilet paper magazine rack together by lining them up with each other and securing them together with the screws. Start with the back and the bottom portion. Then connect the sides, and finally the front. Secure all of the connections using the drywall screws. Make sure that they are tightly screwed in.

Step 5: Placing it on the Wall

With your rack complete, screw your rack onto the wall with the screws. Make sure that they are secured and tight. Place the spring loaded toilet paper holder between the two holes you made. Your toilet paper magazine rack is now complete.
