A mudroom cabinet is something that is typically used in locations that have harsher winters and windy falls. These rooms are used as the middlemen between the outdoors and your home. Adding cabinets to these rooms can help prevent large messes and keep your mudroom looking and feeling more organized. In-wall shelves are perfect for these types of rooms, as they will help keep the area open and easy to walk through.

Step 1 – Prepare

The first thing that you will need to do is consider your wall studs. You will need to know if they are built on 24 inch or 16 inch centers. You should also know how the wiring works. Most mudrooms do not have wiring, but if they do you should know about them. Make sure that you have all of the studs located before you begin.

Step 2 – Cut Sheetrock

Begin by getting the sheetrock cut away between the framing members. Get your keyhole saw and make sure that you cut in between the space of the studs. You will need to cut the edge of your 2x4. Make sure it is upright as you do this. Stop at the height that you will want your shelf space at. You do this going both ways.

Step 3 – Side and Back Shelving

You will then need to get the side and the back of the shelves put together. Your backing should consist of plywood that is about a half of an inch. The sides should be your 1x4 lumber. Make sure that your plywood is the same size as the opening. Get your 1x4s cut to the same width and get the plywood attached to the edges using your flathead wood screws. Get the two vertical pieces to fit in with the horizontal ones.

Step 4 – Build Shelves

Get your pre-made box slid into the opening and attached to the 2x4 studs. You will now be ready to build the shelves. You will find that the easiest way to do this is to get the pieces of track placed on the vertical part. From there you can get the shelves cut how you want them to be. They will then be ready to be placed on the brackets.

Step 5 – Finish up

You will be able to finish up this project with some molding. This look will help give your shelves a finished appearance. However, you do not have to do this since it is in a mudroom. These types of rooms do not typically have to be as aesthetically pleasing as the rest of the house. However, you may want to paint them. You will need to be sure that these shelves are easily cleaned, as this area tends to get dirty. If you decide to paint them, use a forgiving color. White is typically going to not last long in these types of rooms.
