Building Freestanding Stairs for Homes

  • Advanced

If you want to put build a freestanding staircase in your home, then there are a few ways in which you can do this. The freestanding staircase has no support for its weight except where it is attached to the landing of the floor above and where it rests on the floor below. The freestanding stairs can fit comfortably into a small area where there is not enough space to add intermediate supports, and can also be positioned in the middle of a room, as it does not need the structural support of a wall or of posts.

A freestanding staircase can often be built around a curve, and if you are interested in making your own freestanding building stairs, then you should be able to do this without any problem. Freestanding staircases are ideal for people without much room for a landing and stair rise, but you should be aware that they can be dangerous for small children.

Freestanding Stair Kits

Rather than having to make your own freestanding stairs, you can purchase kits that will allow you to fit the stairs without the worry of cutting them or installing them into difficult locations. The problems with a staircase often involve fitting the banister and rail into a tight location, but with a freestanding staircase, you can place it anywhere, and add railings along the side to keep people from falling over.

Most freestanding stair kits use a large board that is placed on the landing on the upper floor and then has metal or wooden supports extending down the length of the staircase. With metal supports, the user may be able to get joints that slot together, so you can install as many risers as you need to build the stair. The stair treads are then attached to the supports using nails or screws, and the underside secured so that the weight is taken by the risers. The final piece then locks into the floor using a flange, which keeps all of the stairs in position.

Do it Yourself

If you wish to cut the freestanding stairs yourself, then you will need to know how to construct perfectly level runners and risers. Failing to properly fit the runners can mean that you end up without being able to properly place the stairs. Most runners on the staircase will need to be laminated to a higher specification than with ordinary stairs, in order to ensure that they can support the weight of people standing on them.

If you are planning to make your own freestanding stairs, then you should consider that the stairs in the middle of the staircase need to be fully supported, otherwise the staircase will not be able to take regular use. You also need to attach the top of the staircase to the upper floor landing with enough accuracy that the staircase will not become loose, or dangerous. Building freestanding stairs is a difficult job, and best left to professionals who can do the job correctly.
