Installing a tile backsplash can provide you with a durable and beautiful area in your kitchen. In order to install the tile, you are going to need to know how much tile to buy. Here are the basics of how to calculate the amount of tile that you need for your backsplash.

Step 1 - Diagram

Start out by drawing a diagram of the backsplash on a piece of paper. Try to get as much detail as possible with all of the different areas of the space.

Step 2 - Get Dimensions

The next thing that you need to do is get the dimensions of the space. Take your tape measure and get the length and width of all of the areas on the diagram.

Step 3 - Calculate

After you have the dimensions of all of the areas, you need to determine the square footage of the space. Multiply the length by the width of each rectangular area. This will give you the exact square footage of the area. Once you have the exact square footage, add 10% to that number for waste. Once you have that number, you need to divide it by the number of square feet in a box of the tile that you chose. Round up to the nearest box size to know how much to buy.
