Caring for Your Green Bean Plants
It is easy to grown and maintain green bean plants in your home garden. You can enjoy these fresh vegetables often if you plant them strategically over the course of the growing season. A Warm Soil Plant
Plant a green bean plant when there is absolutely no chance of frost. Keep soil above 65 degrees Fahrenheit. A temperature around 70 degrees will produce a much better yield. You can control this by first planting them inside the home and then transferring them to the outside when these conditions are right.
Never Crowd the Plant
The green bean plant will be more inclined to grow when in a bare area. Try to avoid planting where you recently planted other vegetables, and move green beans to new soil each season.
Green beans thrive in soil rich in nutrients. Either use some sort of plant food high in nutrients, or plant in compost. If you choose to use fertilizer, then use ½ cup of it for each 10 feet of plant. Water the plant immediately after fertilizing so the soil can absorb the nutrients more quickly.

When the weather is overly dry, water the green bean plant once a week. Make sure that the soil is moist—not wet—to ensure maximum production.
Posting Green Beans
One favorite variety of green bean plant grows on a climbing vine. If you are planting a pole string bean, position in small mounds about 3 feet apart. Place a post in the center of the pole and push the seeds about an inch into the soil. As the green bean plant grows, you may have to train the plant to climb the post.
Harvesting Without Killing
Incorrect harvesting can harm the green bean plant. It takes anywhere from 45 to 75 days for the plant to mature. Keep an eye on the pods and pick them just before they bulge. The beans should feel crisp to the touch and should make a snap sound when broken in half. When removing the pod, hold onto the plant as you pull the bean off. It is also a good idea to pick the beans when the plant is dry.
