Cheap Room Divider Alternatives

If you have a large space that needs to broken up into smaller spaces, but you're on a budget, you could use some cheap room dividers. You can separate an office space or a bedroom without spending a lot of money on expensive room dividers. Try these alternatives.

Hang Curtains

Curtains are probably the least expensive alternative to use as a room divider. Use ones you have on hand or get some inexpensive ones from a resale shop. String a curtain wire across the area you want to divide and hang some curtains, or even a sheet. They provide privacy, but at the same time can be opened easily for access.

Place Plants

If privacy isn't your main concern, but you want to break up a large space, plants make a nice alternative. Large potted plants, indoor trees or even hanging baskets can be placed across the area to provide a natural division. If you don't want the trouble of watering plants, use artificial ones. Place 2 step ladders back to back and put various plants on each step to provide a nice focal point for your room.

Bamboo Shades

Bamboo shades make a nice, inexpensive room divider. They can be placed almost anywhere. Hang them from the ceiling where you need a room divider. They can be rolled down to provide privacy when needed and rolled up if you want to open up the space.

Bookcases can be used as an alternative room divider. Shorter ones can be used to break up a large space where privacy is not a concern. Use taller ones if privacy is required, such as separating a bedroom space. You can paint or wallpaper the back of the bookcase to match your decor and add a little interest. If you don't have a bookcase, pick one up at a garage sale or a second hand store to save money.

Using 2 bookcases as a divider adds more dimension and eliminates the need to cover the back. Place identical bookcases back to back for a sturdy divider that can also be used for storage or to display knickknacks.

Panel Dividers

Large panel room dividers are quite expensive, but you can make your own divider as a cheap alternative. Panel dividers are made up of 3 or more hinged panels that can be set at angles to stand freely.

  • Pegboard - Pegboard can be used to make a simple room divider. Cut each panel to the same size. Leave as is or paint to decorate. Connect each one by placing a hinge near the top, bottom and one in the center.
  • Framed Panels - Framed panels are lightweight and you can use most any kind of fabric for the inside to match your decor. Cut, sand, assemble and paint or stain each frame before adding the fabric of your choice to the center and attaching hinges.
  • Shutter Panels - A simple, yet elegant panel divider can be made with shutters. You don't have to cut them, just paint and attach 3 hinges to each one to connect them.
