Choosing the right curtains and window treatments doesn't have to be a major problem to the do-it-yourself decorator. You need to keep in mind the weight and care of the fabric, color, price and style.
In these tough economic times, price is a major concern to most do-it-yourself decorators. You can find really nice window treatments in both discount stores and mid range stores such as Kohls and JCPenney. You may be surprised at the quality and choice you have. Also, if you are a savvy seamstress, you can make your own for a fraction of the custom price. A favorite of some seamstresses is making curtains from flat sheets.
you want a bright, light room you will want to stay with lighter colors or white, and probably thinner fabrics. Light colors will also make the room appear larger. If you are a daytime sleeper, you may want to darken the room with darker fabrics or darker colors.
Care and Maintenance
Care is something else to consider. Draperies and curtains that must be dry cleaned are a problem if you are on a tight budget. Many beautiful fabrics are now available in washable form.
Style is completely up to you. If you like a clean, simple look, you won't want a lot of pleats and ruffles or fussy fabrics. On the other hand, a very formal room calls for draperies that are pleated in formal, heavy fabrics. Look through magazines and watch do-it-yourself shows for ideas.
