Costs of Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Engineered hardwood flooring is another word for solid hardwood flooring that is made out of layers. The layers of the flooring are fused together through an engineered process. The process forms a solid wooden board. Engineered hardwood floors are known for their durability and can be made to withstand all of the same type of traffic when installed as a solid wood door.

The costs of engineered hardwood flooring varies depending on the type of material used in the making of the flooring. Engineered hardwood flooring that consists of a lot of solid wood components are more expensive than engineered hardwood flooring that uses less wood components.

Factors that Affect Cost

The wood’s quality plays a role in the pricing of engineered hardwood flooring. Engineered hardwood flooring at lower prices has more knots, differences in the coloring of the flooring and may have other imperfections not found in engineered hardwood flooring that is of a higher quality. With increases in the price the quality of the wood becomes more consistent in terms of color. This depends on the type of tree or species used in the wood.

Costs of Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Some of the cost for engineered hardwood flooring are as follows:

  • Engineered hardwood flooring, 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch in thickness, $2.59 to $14.00 per square feet
  • Pre-finished hardwood flooring, $2.00 to $4.00 per square feet
  • Site-finished hardwood flooring, $6.00 to $8.00 and up per square feet
  • Solid wood hardwood flooring, 3/4 inch in thickness, $3.39 to $14.00 per square feet
  • Solid wood thin profile hardwood flooring, 5/16 inch in thickness, $3.29 to $4.99 per square feet

Number of Plies in Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Engineered hardwood flooring costs are driven by the number of plies(layers) in the core and the thickness of the face. Flooring made at the lower cost ranges should have at least 3 plies in the core. Engineered hardwood flooring costing between $6.00 to $8.00 has around 5 plies. Flooring at the higher price range has a minimum of 7 plies or more. The thickness for any cost range of engineered hardwood flooring will be from 1/12 to 1/6 of an inch. Clearly the thicker the top layer is, the more the flooring will cost.

Cost of Installing Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Installation costs for engineered hardwood flooring will also vary depending on the cost range as well as local and geographical labor costs. This can add another $2.00 to $5.00 in the overall cost of the engineered wood flooring. If you choose to install the flooring yourself, this can eliminate or reduce your labor costs but may add to the install costs. This is the case if you need to purchase any of the tools needed to install the flooring or obtain the expertise needed to do the job correctly.
