How to Cutout for a Plug Box in Ceramic Tiles

Sometimes, you must change the pattern of the walls or install a plug box in the tile of a bathroom, living room, or other room in the house. You don’t need the services of a contractor for such a simple task. Just follow these steps.

Step 1 - Measure

Measure the distance between the edge of the outlet and the outside edge of the last piece of tile. The cut needs to be made on the outlet box, not the faceplate. The faceplate rests upon the tile's surface. Remember to cut the edges of the tile so that they remain concealed beneath the faceplate. This is the trickiest part of cutting a plug box in a ceramic tile. You have to be careful to not chip the tile.

Step 2 - Mark Measurements on Surface

Next use the grease pencil to mark the tile. The grease pencil, which is made of colored and hardened wax, is used to mark hard, glossy, and nonporous surfaces. Remember that the type of cut, whether an L-shaped cut or a U-shaped cut, depends on the placement of the appliance box.

Step 3 - Cut Tiles

Use your wet saw at a particular angle to make the cut. Don't forget to flip the tile over and cut it from the backside. Use the same marks that you used to make the initial cut.

Step 4 - Let the Tile Dry

Don't forget to dry the tile completely. Doing so will make the bonding agent stick both to the wall and the tile. Wear proper eye and ear protection to protect you from accidents. Protective wear may be cumbersome, but it can be a real blessing.
