Deck cleaning is a process that is considered part of routine maintenance for a homeowner with an outdoor deck exposed to the elements. There are specifics to follow when cleaning and certain conditions that prompt the need to actually clean a deck.
When Deck Cleaning is Needed
Deck cleaning is called for when certain conditions are present. For example, it is a good idea to remove such debris as mold, dirt, and residue before they build up.
The Deck Cleaning Procedure
The deck cleaning process does involve a few steps, including:
Step 1 - Prepare Space
To prepare the area for deck cleaning, it’s smart to remove any items that will not be part of the deck cleaning. It’s also a good idea to soak the surrounding areas with water to dilute any deck cleaning chemicals that may over spray.
Step 2 - Prepare Chemicals
Make sure to properly mix any cleaning chemicals to manufacturer specifications and wear protective gloves and eye gear.
Step 3 - Clean
It is smart to work on a small area of a deck at a time by applying cleaner and letting it work for the manufacturer’s recommended time. Follow this by scrubbing the deck with a hard bristle broom. Be sure to scrub with the grain of the wood and not against it. Once complete, rinse the area.
