DIY Gutter Protection Tips

If you are a homeowner, gutter protection is something you will want to keep in mind, both for draining water away from the foundation and to protect your gutters from backing up and possibly leaking into your home, damaging walls and ceilings. There are a few do-it-yourself tips that you may want to use.

You Will Need

  • Ladder
  • Trash bags
  • Gloves
  • Garden trowel
  • Gutter screen
  • Caulk
  • Touch up paint

Step 1: Clean the Gutters

If you have many trees in your area, you are well aware of all the leaves that can accumulate in your gutters. These will wash into the downspouts, possibly clogging them and causing a lot of problems when the freezing rain and snow of winter arrives. Although it isn't a favorite project of most homeowners, it is a necessary one. Get your ladder out, put on your gloves and use the garden trowel to scoop the leaves from the gutters. Be sure to clean them away from the downspout drain openings also.

Step 2: Inspect Gutters

After your gutters are clean, check the seams for any signs of leakage or rust. Also check for chips in the enamel and touch them up if found. If your gutters appear to be leaking, use caulking to seal them.

Step 3: Installing Gutter Screens

Many homeowners install gutter screens over the gutters after they are cleaned to keep leaves from filling them up again. This will almost totally eliminate the gutter cleaning chore.
