An electric mirror on the doors of the car makes it easier for the driver to have a quick view of the vehicles coming from behind. You can easily move and adjust the electric side view mirror with buttons according to your need. The wiring of electric mirrors sometimes disconnects or needs to be repaired before causing any accidents. Repair your car’s electric mirrors by following the steps described below.
Step 1 – Take Appropriate Precautions
You must follow certain precautions to avoid any type of injury or hazard. Make sure that the place where you will work is well lit, well- ventilated and spacious. Wear your protection gear for safety.
Step 2 – Disconnect Electric Supply
First of all, disconnect the electric supply. Make sure you properly detach the electric supply because you may get an electric shock. You can easily find the battery under the hood of car, near the front. It is advisable to unscrew only the negative cable of the battery. For this work, use Philips head screwdriver or wrench according to the car model.
Step 3 – Remove the Door Panel
Open the door and remove the interior door panel. Now take off the trim pieces and put them aside before removing any bolts. Use screwdriver to unscrew the bolts or screws positioned on the bottom of the arm rest location. After removing the bolts or screws place them aside carefully and pull the door panel about 6 inches away from the door to check whether all screws have been removed.
Step 4 – Detach the Wiring inside the Door Panel
After removing the door panel, disconnect all wiring inside the door panel. Remember that you must be careful and attentive while working with the wiring of the door. First of all remove the wire connector on the power window switch behind the panel. Now remove the connector from the interior light which is on the bottom of the door panel. Remove the wire connector going to the electric side view mirror.
Step 5 – Detect the Fault
Now test the electric mirror wiring with a multi-meter. It will guide you if the fault is in the electric mirror motor. If no fault is detected in the motor then attach the meter to the switch wiring to check if it has any problem. You can also check the fuses which operate the electric mirror motor. Change them if the fault lies in them.
Step 6 – Repair the Fault and Finish Up
After finding the error, repair it. If the fault is in the wiring change them or if it is in motor then replace it with a new one. Now connect all wires and replace the screws. Repeat the same procedure with the other front door of the car if necessary. Reconnect battery and adjust your mirrors according to your need. Test the wiring. If the electric mirrors are working properly then you have fixed the wiring properly. If not, go through the above mentioned steps again and perhaps consult an expert to ensure you are going about the procedure properly.
