Eliminate Scratch Marks from Teak Bedroom Furniture

Teak bedroom furniture is strong and durable, but over the years, it is still susceptible to wear and tear. After awhile you might start to notice scratching, graying, and even a few cracks in your teak bedroom furniture. With a little cleaning and a little bit of elbow grease, you can restore your teak bedroom furniture to its original shine and color. Indoor teak furniture is less susceptible to weathering and harsh damage, but the same steps can help you either way.

Clean the Furniture

The first step in making your teak bedroom furniture look like new is to clean it. If you clean or dust your furniture on a regular basis, this won’t be too hard. Buy a specialized teak cleaner from your local hardware store or use diluted detergent to wipe down the teak bedroom furniture. You can use a durable scrub brush to really get into any scratches or cracks and clean them up.

Let Dry and Fill Any Cracks

Once you’re sure the wood is completely dry, you can begin filling any major cracks in the furniture. You should probably give the furniture a whole day or night to dry. To fill any cracks, simply take some glue on a rag or your finger and rub it along the crack in the wood. Allow the glue to dry completely before you begin to sand down the furniture. The glue will fill in the crack and make sure that the damage doesn't get any worse.

Sand the Teak Bedroom Furniture

With fine grain sandpaper, begin to give your furniture a light sanding. This will remove any surface scratches as well as restore the original color of the wood. If you have deeper scratches or surface marks in your furniture, you can use medium grain sandpaper, followed by the fine grain. Remember to sand in the direction of the wood grain. The goal of this step is to sand until the vibrant honey color of the wood returns.

Use Teak Oil

Using a soft rag or brush, apply teak oil to your furniture. While teak oil isn’t necessary for those who own teak bedroom furniture, it is helpful in maintaining the original shape of your wood. Make sure to follow the instructions of the teak oil, as sometimes more than one coat is suggested. If this is the case, wait about an hour between each coat so that the oil has time to dry. If you want, you can use a sealant, but these are usually used for outdoor furniture.

Teak bedroom furniture is durable and nice to have over the years. If you have teak bedroom furniture, you know it's going to last you a decent amount of time. When you follow these steps and clean up your bedroom furniture, you'll notice that you won't have to clean it again until another year or two. Make sure you also take precautionary steps, such as cleaning up any spills right away and regularly dusting your teak bedroom furniture to keep it in good condition.
