Using Dehumidifier

In order to waterproof a basement, a dehumidifier is not the option that you want to choose. They work well if there is a problem with moisture in the air; however, they do not work well when there is water coming through the interior walls or floor. A good dehumidifier will cost between $300 and $1,000.

Groundwork Costs

Water in the interior of your basement is going to mean that there is a lot of water on the exterior of the basement. To fix this problem, you need to have some regrading done on the landscape near your home.

These estimates can fluctuate a little, depending on who does the work and how much new soil is going to be needed. It usually costs about $150 per hour for someone with a front loader to regrade a home. You may need up to 5-yards of new soil, which is another $50.

Drainage Pipes

If the basement is wet from water seeping through the ground, you will need to divert the water away from the walls and floor of the basement. Drainage pipes will need to be laid around your home and away from your home.

You will need someone with a backhoe, several yards of crushed rock, and PVC drainage pipes. It can cost between $2,000 and $4,000, depending on the size of the home.

Sealing Interior Walls

If the accumulation of moisture on the walls is not enough to send rivers of water onto the floor, but enough for a damp feeling in the room, then you can use some sealant on the walls and floor. Doing this project yourself will save a considerable amount of money. You can expect to pay up to $300 for a large basement.

Sealing Exterior Walls

When the water near the home is not enough to warrant an entire drainage system, you can simply waterproof the outside walls. Special paint is used to form a thick membrane over the basement walls. You will have to dig to the bottom of the foundation to do so. Hiring someone will cost over $1,000 while doing it yourself can cost $300 to $400.

Using a Sump Pump

Another way to keep your basement free from water is to use a sump pump. This tool is mostly used for basements that are not finished and are in an area prone to flooding and excessive runoff. A good sump pump can cost between $150 and $300 for the pump and installation if you do it yourself. Add another $200 if you hire someone to do it for you.
