A fireplace shelf not only is something that adds a great amount of functionality to any room but it also can add to the room's decorating potential. A fireplace shelf is perfect for displaying your knick knacks or even for storing some of the items you do not want to leave out in plain sight. Here are several different ideas for shelving around your fireplace.
1 - Wood Carved Mantel Shelving
Probably the simplest form of fireplace shelving is in the individual mantel that is designed and added to the fireplace. The mantel can be made of different types of materials and can be a wide variety of sizes. Below is a list of materials that can be used to make your fireplace mantel shelf:
- Carved Wood
- Brick or Stone
A mantel shelf is great for displaying pictures, candles and other works of art.
2 - Side Bookcases
If you are looking for something a little more extensive around your fireplace, consider building a set of side bookcases flanking the fireplace. This is a great option if the wall around your fireplace is large or if you have many different things you would like to store or display. You can either build your side bookcases from the mantle down to the floor or you can extend the book case all the way up to the top of the ceiling right down to the edge of the floor.
3 - Built-In Cabinets
If your fireplace is set inside of a wall or if you have very deep inset walls, consider building cabinets around your fireplace. The cabinets become a great extra storage solution for items that you may not want to display.
4 - Contemporary Bowed-Shelving
If you want to go for something different, try to create your own style of fireplace shelving. For example, if your home has a contemporary feel, you may want to look at buying engineered wood and molding it to the angle or the shape you want. Then create and install shelving to match. You can create great dimension by adding shelving that does not get installed in a horizontal or vertical fashion.
5 - Paint and Decorate
Never think that your fireplace shelf must stay one color or one style. Have fun with your decorating and your painting. Try a faux painting technique or paint your shelving a bold color that will contrast or compliment the other components in the room. Do not think that standard shelving colors (blacks, whites and browns) are your only options. The fireplace shelf and shelving can add so many dimensions to your room.
