5 Ways to Improve Kitchen Storage Space
Have you ever heard anyone say, “I have way too much storage space in my kitchen.”? I didn’t think so. In fact, if there was one room in the house where most people can use additional storage space, it’s the kitchen. After all, pots and pans take up a lot of space, not to mention the blenders, toasters and other cooking implements we all have cluttering up our counters.
Having too much storage space in the kitchen is akin to finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, always hopeful but never obtainable. Even still, here are five easy and inexpensive ways to maximize the storage space in your kitchen.
Kitchen Clean-Up – It’s time to separate the often used from the rarely used. Open up all of your cabinets and start emptying them out. Separate the items into two groups – the things you use often and the things that you use only once in a while. Only put the things you use often back into your cabinets. Find a place elsewhere for the rarely used items, just not in the kitchen. For many people, this step alone is enough to free up storage space so everything fits more comfortably.
Racks and Racks – There are plenty of space saving tools on the market that you can add to your kitchen that don’t cost a lot of money. Hang your best utensils on a rack near your oven, use drawer inserts to keep silverware organized or use a spice rack or lazy susan to manage your spice bottles. In many cases, maximizing storage space is as simple as just organizing the items within that space.
Use Cabinet Doors – Cabinet doors offer a wealth of storage room if you know how to take advantage of it. Pick up food wrap racks that attach to the door so you can store those inconvenient necessities there rather than inside the cabinet. You can also organize all of your pot lids in one space using pot lid rack, no more digging around in the bottom of the cabinet!
Under the Sink Organizing – There’s a lot of storage space under your kitchen sink, but it is usually never organized well. Dollar stores sell hundreds of different types of plastic storage containers that will fit under the sink and you can organize all of your cleaning supplies within them. You’ll be able to fit more and everything will be easier to find.
Get Rid of the Junk Drawer – Every kitchen has one; the overfilled drawer that captures every loose end – the junk drawer. Some drawers collect so much that it begins taking over additional drawers. Find a new place to store all of these items, like in the garage or a box in the basement. This will free up a whole drawer or two that you can use to store much needed kitchen items.
