Garden Shed Construction Basics

Constructing a garden shed in your back yard is a great way to store your gardening equipment and to keep out of the elements when repotting plants. This can be a simple do-it-yourself project.

The first step in garden shed building is deciding what size you need or want. You can be as simple or as elaborate as you want. There are plenty of free design plans available online, some even big enough to include a children’s play area inside.

Once you have decided on a plan, you will need to decide on a foundation type. Depending on the size of the shed, one of the following should work: concrete blocks, concrete pillars or concrete blocks. It is recommended that you lay gravel for drainage.

Walls and Windows

Again depending on the size of the shed you are building, the wall size and stud count will vary. A very small shed may not require windows but with a larger shed you will probably want to include them.

The door is probably the simplest consideration and the shed can even be built with just a basic plywood on hinges opening if desired.

The roofing will also depend upon the building but proper drainage does need to be considered.

Before beginning any building project remember to apply for appropriate permits.
