There are many important things to keep in mind when you are planning the construction of your own geodesic dome. A great energy-efficient home, shelter, or greenhouse, a geodesic dome is relatively easy to construct, though it will take many hours to complete. Here are some tips to get you started.
Tip #1: Use the Desert Domes website’s calculator to determine the dimensions of your intended geodesic dome. This very helpful calculator offers six size options and once you determine which size you want to build, the calculator will give you the triangle and strut measurements so you can start building.
Tip #2: Depending on the use of your dome, you need to select materials suitable for your needs. Greenhouse dorms require ventilation and a sturdy frame that supports a water system and constant humidity. Camping domes need ventilation, rain-proofing, and wind-proofing. Determine what you will use your dome for and build accordingly.
Tip #3: PVC pipe is commonly used to build the dome frame, but PVC pipe has a short UV life. If you plan on using PVC pipe for your dome, be sure to paint or cover the pipe with rust-o-lean to prevent it from becoming brittle prematurely.
