How to Hang Bathroom Cabinets on a Wall

Hanging bathroom cabinets on a wall is a great way to increase storage space, as well as to improve the design and look of your bathroom. It is a basic task that you can accomplish within an hour. You will not have to hire a carpenter or handyman. Save the expensive professionals for tasks that actually require them, and gather the following list of tools and materials so that you can complete this project yourself.

Locate the Studs

After deciding where to install the cabinet, you must locate the studs in order to ensure a solid attachment. Use a stud finder and pencil to mark the studs.

Mark the Inside of the Cabinet

Record the distance from the wall to the first stud. Now measure the inside of the cabinet, allowing for the width of the outer edge. Mark an "X" every 6-inches along the line. Start at the top and work your way down.

If the last 2 marks are not set evenly at 6-inches, either separate the distance and add 2 marks, or divide the space by 2 and add 1. After the first line of marks has been completed, continue marking the inside of the cabinet using the measurements from stud to stud as you go.

Predrill the Holes

The backs of most bathroom cabinets are fragile; therefore, you must pre-drill a small hole along the "X" marks using the 1/8-inch drill bit. Drill from the inside of the cabinet. Break burrs off before installing the bathroom cabinet.

Install the Bathroom Cabinet

Slide the bathroom cabinet into place, making sure that the top is level. If the cabinet is on the floor, then small wooden shims can be pushed into place until the cabinet is perfect. If it is wall-mounted, then adjust it accordingly. Look through the small hole in the back to make sure that lines up to the studs. Drive a 3-inch screw into the hole. Continue this process until all of the holes are filled with a screw and attached to a stud in the wall. Make sure that you tighten them down as much as possible without going through the back.

Finishing Up

Once the bathroom cabinet has been secured to the studs, the ends of the screws need to be covered. The cabinets should have been sold along with some type of cover. If these caps do not snap into place, then apply glue to the back and place them carefully onto the head of the screws. When doing so, apply enough glue to keep the cap in place, but not so much that it will be impossible to remove it.
