A feed bag is always included in the standard list of horse stable equipment. This is a bag that contains the food of the horse and is placed over the muzzle. Feed bags are important because they ensure that the horses get everything that they need nutrition-wise. It also prevents them from fighting with each other for food. A feed bag lets your horse eat even if it is outside its stall. You can also take this along with you if you and your horse are going on a trip. Also known as a nose bag, it is very useful if your horse is a messy eater. Some vets would recommend that you use a feed bag for your horse to make sure that it finishes all the medications and supplements that you give to it. The feed bag that you make must be durable, lightweight, and easy for your horse to breathe through. This article will teach you the easy steps on making this horse stable equipment yourself.
Step 1 - Feed Bag Material
You can use any fabric that is waterproof. Canvas, nylon or tent fabric will do. The fabric should be breathable and easy to clean out.
Step 2 - Stitch the Bag
Use a sewing machine for this. You simply have to sew the bag into a cylinder shape. Do big, stout stitches to make the bag as durable as possible. Get the circumference of the cylinder because you will need this for making the bottom part. Make sure that the base part is sewed tightly onto the cylinder part because this is what will stop the horse feed from coming out.
Step 3 - Attach 2 Loops
There should be a loop on each side of the rim. This is what you will use to attach the strap. You can make the strap from the same fabric as the bag or you can use a rope. If you want to adjust the length of the strap, you can untie one of the loops and retie it either shorter or longer. Your strap should be just the right length so that it does not look as if the horse's nose is being forced into the food. Ideally the horse should feed with the bag on the ground so you can use this position to measure the length.
Step 4 - Include a Breakaway Clip or Strap
There should be a clip that snaps if the horse's feed bag gets trapped on something. This will keep your horse from suffocating on the bag. The horse is also at risk for drowning especially if he dips the feed bag into water.
