How to Add Pet Ramps to Your Deck

A pet ramp is a necessity when it comes to your dog’s health. When a dog jumps from a height instead of using a pet ramp to descend from a height, the impulse due to the jump directly acts on the front legs and its perpendicular to the spinal column. This pressure on the spinal column causes compression of the spinal discs and this in the long run can get ruptured or herniated. So you must always train your dog to use a pet ramp, especially in the case of decks. Smaller dogs also find it difficult to climb up bigger steps or jump and get on to deck. In this case also, a pet ramp is the best option.

Building a Pet Ramp

Building a pet ramp is very easy and you can do it on your own. The most common material of which you can build this pet ramp is plywood. It is best to build this pet ramp when you are building the deck.

For adding the pet ramp you need a few basic tools:

  • Saw
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver
  • Plywood board
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil or marker
  • Lumber (1 inch by 6 inches)

Measurement and Arrangement

Measure the height of the deck from the ground, or if there are steps between the ground and your deck, then measure the distance from the top of the deck to the bottom step. After noting down this distance, use the pencil and the measuring tape to mark a section of the same dimensions on the lumber from its side. Repeat the same procedure so that you have marked 2 sections.

Carefully cut these 2 sections using the saw. This will form the back support of the pet ramp for your deck. On the lumber, mark 2 sections that are twice the height of the deck. Cut these 2 long sections to form the base of your ramp. The width of the ramp depends on the size of your pet. The standard width is 1 1/2 feet. Cut 2 sections of the lumber to 1 foot lengths or your desired width.

Construction Procedure

Lay down the 2 long pieces of lumber 1 foot apart and perfectly parallel to each other. Screw the 2 pieces of lumber measuring 1 foot on the 2 ends of the pieces and join them to form a rectangle. Make the 2 pieces of remaining lumber upright, then screw them to the base on one end, thus forming an extended “L”.

Measure the diagonal distance from the top of the “L” to its base on the further side. Cut 2 sections of lumber of this length and cut a section of the plywood measuring 1 foot in breadth and the diagonal length of the “L” as its length. Fix the 2 pieces of lumber on both sides of the ramp frame and form the third side of the triangle. Now use wood screws to fix the plywood over the diagonal side and the pet ramp for your deck is ready.
