The amount of moisture, or the humidity, of the air is a big factor in breathing, energy, and how your body processes heat. If the humidity is below 15 percent, then your skin can dry out and you may have a sore throat. If it is above 50 percent, you will feel very hot, sticky, and steamy. Here are some tips to adjust the home humidity level for the different seasons.
1. Use a Dehumidifier
One of the essential tools for the summer months is a dehumidifier. This simple appliance will filter the air and regulate the amount of moisture that is let into your home. You can set the level of humidity on the appliance and it automatically does its job. All dehumidifiers have a tank in them where the water is transferred back to a liquid. This tank will need to be periodically emptied or the dehumidifier will shut off. You can choose a room or a whole house dehumidifier depending on your budget.
2. Use Plants
Controlling the home humidity level is something that you can do year round with the use of different kinds of plants. The most noteworthy is a small cactus. Since this plant is great as finding moisture in the ground or through the air, it will keep your home at comfortable humidity levels. Ferns are another great alternative. They will grow in a corner of your home and do not require a lot of exposure to light, so they are great for year-round use.
3. Use a Humidifier
Besides having a dehumidifier in the summer months, you should also look into using a humidifier in the late fall, winter, and early spring months. The air during this time of year is void of moisture. This is especially true in a home that has an oil, or wood, furnace. The air intake for these devices takes in the air and releases air that has been dehumidified. Using a humidifier that you can regulate will help you have a more comfortable level in your home. If you continually wake up with sore throats or receive friction shocks when touching something, the humidity level in your home is low.
4. Open Windows
In the spring and in the fall, you can regulate your home humidity level by simply opening the windows a few inches. If you open windows that are adjacent to each other, you will have a cross breeze. This breeze not only cools off your home and brings in fresh air, but it also keeps the humidity at an acceptable level. You can also do this in the summer months when there is a breeze. Stagnant air that is allowed to sit will only feel more oppressive and heavy.
