How To Assemble A Push Mower

Assembling a store-bought push mower is a fairly easy task that shouldn't take you more than an hour. The manufacturer already has assembled most of the mower parts in the factory. They leave only the bulky parts that are too intrusive to ship fully assembled. The following will provide a guide to help you assemble your push mower. You might not need all of the supplies below. Sometimes they include everything you need in the box.

Step One, Empty The Box

Empty the shipping box of all parts and pieces. Sort the parts so that you will be able to find them as needed. The motor and blade will already be attached to the frame. In some cases you may find the back wheels already assembled as well.

Step Two, Make It Roll

Establish which parts you will need to assemble the wheels and attach them to the frame. You will likely only need to attach the front wheels, if at all, due to the self propel features in lawn mowers.

Step Three, The Handles

The push handle mechanism is comprised of two pieces. Attach the bottom piece first, then the top one. You will need to thread the pull rope through the guides in order to make the handle accessible from the top or middle of the push handle. Make sure that it is right side up so that the throttle and the self propel guide are in the correct positions.

Step Four, Oil

A new push mower will not come with any fluids in the motor. You will need to add the oil before starting the mower. Make sure you use a synthetic oil. Your owners manual should indicate what kind your mower takes. If you use the wrong type of oil, you could end up spending more money on lawn mower repair later.

Step Five, Gas

Electric mowers aside, you will never get your push mower started if you forget the gas. Fill the gas tank and prime the motor. There is usually a red, yellow or black primer button.

Step Six, Set It

All four wheels on the mower will adjust to mow your lawn at the correct height. The front and the back heights do not need to be even but it will create a more uniform cut if they are. You should only remove about one third of the growth, so keep that in mind when setting your heights.

Step Seven, Start It

After you have primed the motor, hold down the throttle and yank the rope pull. You might have to do this a couple of times to get it going. Let the motor run for a little while to burn off any residue. You can use your new mower now or on your next scheduled day of yard work.
