How to Assemble Work Pieces with a Frame Clamp
In gluing picture frames, one type of clamp that is simple to work with and can effectively glue your frame pieces together is a frame clamp. However, these clamps work differently from other types of clamps so having the following information will help you to better able use them.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Frame pieces
- Frame clamps
- Wood glue
- Brads
- Hammer
- Wood filler
- Drill
- Drill bit
Step 1 – Clamping 2 Frame Pieces
On a flat surface, join two frame pieces end to end. Keep the finished sides of these pieces facing upwards. Without applying glue to the frame pieces, place each piece in a frame clamp, then, position them so the two ends in the clamp fit together perfectly. Tighten the clamp on one of these pieces.
Step 2 – Gluing the Corners
Apply glue to the surfaces of both corners of the clamped pieces where they fit together. Position both pieces so their corners are pressed together. Then tighten the second clamp. Clamp and glue the other corners using this procedure.
Step 3 – Secure the Corner Connections
Use brads, driven through the edges of the corners, to secure the attachment. To avoid splitting the frame, pre-drill a guide hole for the brad. Fill the brad head holes with wood filler. Sand when the filler is dry.
