Attach your ledger board to your vinyl siding properly to have a sturdy moisture-proof deck support by following these steps.
Step 1 - Take Measurements
Measure the distance between floor joists, the height of the sill plate and add 1/2 inch for flashing to vent moisture from the ledger. Measure the length and width of your deck to attach the ledger correctly.
Step 2 - Cut Away the Vinyl Siding
Carefully cut away the siding with a utility knife braced along the edge of the carpenter's square to avoid slicing through the house wrap.
Step 3 - Add 2 x 8 Planks Between Joists
Measure and note from the basement and outside where the joists are, and insert 2 x 8 planks between them with 1-1/2 inch wood screws.
Step 4 - Insert the Flashing
Slip the flashing under the siding so it will cover the ledger board. Get 4 inches of the flashing under the bottom of the siding. Secure flashing with galvanized nails.
Step 5 - Attach Ledger Board
Drill 1/2 inch holes through the ledger board into the planks between joists. Fasten the ledger board with 1/2 inch bolts and washers.
