Many people choose to install rain gutters to their metal carport. If you have never done this before, here are a few steps to take to make the process go more smoothly.
Step 1 - Check the Slope and Measure
The first thing that you will need to do is decide which direction the carport slopes down. If you can't tell easily run some water over the surface and watch it drain off the roof. Take a line-level and mark the highest and lowest points with a pencil.
Step 2 - Measure and Cut the Gutters
Measure the length that you want your gutters to be. Using a saw, you can cut the gutter to the desired length. Always wear working gloves as the metal being cut is extremely sharp and will be near your hands. Many people want the bottom of the gutter to curve out or downspout. While some people try to attach this before they install the gutter, it is best done after the gutter is up.
Step 3 - Install the Gutters
Using a drill, you can screw in the gutters to the hanging brackets on the roof. You will want to continue to attach the brackets and make sure that they are spread out along the entire gutter.
Step 4 - Install the Downspout
The first thing you will need to do is attach a sleeve section to the end of the gutter you just installed. Once this is done, draw around it and then cut out the hole so that water and waste can drain out of it. Once everything has been cut you will want to use silicone seal on the bottom to cover up the rough metal. This will have to sit for about 24 hours so try to do this project on a day when the weather is dry.
Note: If you do not want to cut the materials, you can buy pre-cut gutters Just measure the space before going to the hardware store as well as determining the incline. You want to take into account that it will lean out at the bottom so you know the length and size you need your downspout to be. To avoid measuring errors, you may want to have someone come to your house and measure it for you. Often companies that deliver the materials will do this. At the very least make sure to measure and repeat several times.
