Building a bathroom sink cabinet base can be accomplished with minimal time and effort, simple shop tools, and inexpensive veneered plywood or medium density fiberboard (MDF). Careful planning and measuring will ensure an excellent job. Cabinets can be finished in high-pressure laminate, MDF facings, or veneered plywood. Depending on the size of cabinets to be built, this project can take up to a week to complete.
Step 1 - Measure and Cut Pieces
Begin by carefully laying out and measuring all of the pieces. When cutting plywood, ensure that the saw blade is cutting on the good side and exiting on the rough side. Doing so will prevent splintering of the plywood edges. Carefully mark all pieces with chalk and put them aside in order of assembly. Set the dado blades or router bit to match the approximate width of the plywood or material being used and cut required dadoes for pieces mentioned above.
Step 2 - Begin Assembly of Cabinet
Use waterproof glue or epoxy adhesive, a glue brush, and a scraper to apply the glue to the pieces being joined. Begin by attaching 1 side into the dado of the bottom panel by sliding it into place. Be sure the ends are flush and use the nail gun to nail into the side panel. These pieces can also be secured with screws.
Next, attach the other side, the toe kick between the sides secure with screws as necessary. Stand the cabinet right side up and install the top and back rails, the back facing, and the rest of the parts as the cabinet comes together. Once the cabinet has come together, place it on its front and fit the cabinet back into the dadoes of the sides, bottom and top facing. Doing so will help square the cabinet and a good fit is essential here.
Step 3 - Install Doors and Hardware
Attach the European hinges equidistant on the doors from top to bottom and adjust to fit. Mark the positions of the door handles and carefully install the handles. The countersunk screw holes can be filled with wood putty or plugged with plugs. The cabinet can now be painted, laminated, or stained and varnished.
