Building a window seat is a great way to introduce extra seating into your room, without wasting any floor space. Quite often the space around the window will be wasted anyway. With the right tools and materials available you will easily be able to build a corner window seat which will look at home in any room.

Step 1 - Choose Cabinets

The first thing that you need to do is choose some cabinets which are suitable for your window seat. You will find it easier if you use cabinets as the base because you won't need to build anything else. These will also add extra storage to your room which will be welcomed by everyone. Make sure you choose sturdy cabinets that will be able to support your weight.

The cabinets also need to be the right size, fit into the area properly, and are the right depth to sit on. There are many different types of cabinets you might consider in a variety of different colors and finishes.

Step 2 - Assemble Cabinets

Next you should assemble the cabinets if they are not the pre-assembled type. This can be a little difficult and requires plenty of patience. Follow the instructions when making these cabinets so that they are reliable and durable.

Fix the seats together by bolting them together. Adjustable feet can be fitted onto the bottom of the cabinets to make them much easier to level on the floor.

Step 3 - Make the Top Seat

Once you have assembled the units you then need to arrange them around the corner to make your corner window seat. Get a corner unit to support the seat everywhere. Then measure and cut out a top seat which is either made from MDF or wooden planks. This should be either exactly the same size or slightly smaller than the cabinets.

Then fix the top seat onto the top of the cabinets by using wood glue and then screwing it from under the cabinets. Just make sure you use screws which aren't too long as these could damage the top of the seat.

Step 4 - Make the Cushions

To finish the top seat you need to design and make some cushions. These are very easy to make, you simply need to cut pieces out of fabric and then stitch them together to make a pocket. The inside can then be stuffed using foam and the cushion can be finished by stitching up the outside of the seam. Corner window seats are an ideal way to use every inch of space in your room.
