A kitchen cart is a great addition to any kitchen as it will let you maximize space, especially in a cramped kitchen. You can also place important seasonings or ingredients on the kitchen cart for easy reach during cooking and baking. While there are a variety of kitchen carts for sale in the retail and online market, it is easy to build a kitchen cart for extra storage. Besides needing a few basic materials such as wood blocks and nails, a few carpentry skills will help.

Step 1 - Cut Timber to Size

Determine the length of the cart legs using a measuring tape. Use four-inch by four-inch timber or cedar blocks for the legs. The size of the legs will all depend on the size of the kitchen cart you wish to build. The height will also depend on the length of the legs. You will need four pieces of pre-cut timber for the legs.

Step 2 - Trace the Legs on the Plywood

Place the plywood on the table and position the legs at least ½ inch from each corner. Trace the position of the legs using a pencil. The plywood will serve as the top of your kitchen cart.

Step 3 - Cut Leg Supports

Cut four pieces of leg supports according to size. Use two-inch by two-inch cedar blocks for the leg supports.

Step 4 - Attach Leg Supports

Apply wood glue on the edges of the leg supports and attach to the legs of the kitchen table. The supports can be attached at least halfway over the entire length of the legs. Nail or screw the leg supports for added strength.

Step 5 - Attach the Legs to the Plywood

Apply wood glue on the edge of the legs. Attach the legs to the traced part on the plywood. Use nails or screws to securely attach the legs on the plywood top. A minimum of four screws per leg will provide maximum strength and durability.

Step 6 - Affix Center Support

Use the same two-inch by two-inch cedar block in making a center support. The center support should be the same length as the leg supports. Secure the center support with wood glue and nails/screws.

Step 7 - Secure the Top of the Kitchen Cart

Install the top of your kitchen cart securely. You may use a butcher block, cutting board or old countertop to decorate the top surface of your kitchen cart. Apply moderate amounts of wood glue over the center and sides of the plywood top and firmly affix your board over the plywood. Let dry for at least 30 minutes.

Step 8 - Smooth the Surfaces

Sand your kitchen cart until all surfaces are smooth. Apply varnish or your choice of finish over bare surfaces and let dry. You may also add additional shelves under the kitchen cart to provide additional storage space.

You may ask the help of a friend, family member, or neighbor when building your own kitchen cart for extra storage if you have few carpentry skills.
