Building a pool house from scratch is no easy feat, but depending on your level of expertise, you might be able to create one you like. There are many pool house designs that are available to you from different designer sources. You may also choose to make your own design to allow for the space that you need. Take into consideration what you will be using the space for: entertaining or storage? No matter which route you take you will need to get the plans approved by your local building committee as well as purchase the proper permits for the job.

Step 1 - Decide on a Foundation

The foundation is the starting point for your structure and determines what the structure will be shaped like. You can use a deck like foundation or a concrete foundation for a more house-like structure. Whichever foundation you choose to use you will need to set posts that allow for the structure to be raised. When setting the foundation you will also need to allow for plumbing.

Step 2 - Frame It

Frame in your pool house to the desired specifications with 4x4s and 2x4s. You will need to make sure that your framing is secure before you hang the drywall.

Step 3 - Add the Roof

Your framing project will also include framing for the roof. Put plywood over the framing and cover with tar paper and roofing tiles. This can be easy or difficult depending on the pitch of your roof.

Step 4 - Add Electrical and Plumbing

Plan where you need light switches and plugs. Wire in the boxes and switches. Set up all water pipes and drains. Make sure that the drains work before drywalling.

Step 5 - Add Drywall

Hang your drywall. Cover all framing with drywall then patch and sand it. Put up any wood trim around windows and doors

Step 6 - Add Fixtures and Appliances

Now is when you will install any cabinets, counters, appliances, and permanent fixtures. All of which that would have been planned for in the original design. You can go as plain or as fancy as you choose depending on what the function of your pool house.

Step 7 - Add Flooring and Paint

A good choice of flooring for pool houses is tile. There is also rubber flooring available to help prevent slips. Paint your walls to tolerate moist conditions. After you are done with the painting you can install all of your doors and hardware.

These are just the basic steps that you might need to take in order to build a pool house. Whether you choose to do the work your self or hire a contractor you are sure to enjoy this new addition to your outdoor living space.
