Love the pool but hate the pool pump? Your swimming pool is a great addition to your back yard. It is a great place to entertain, swim for exercise and cool off during the long hot summer months, but the pool pump is an eyesore. What do you do? You can make a simple cover for it that will blend into the landscaping. It is easy once you know how to do it. So here are directions to build a simple removable pool pump cover yourself.
Step 1 - Measure
You will need to measure both the length and the width of your pool pump before you go to the hardware store.
Step 2 - Shop
Once you have your measurements you can go to the hardware store and buy the plywood in the correct size. Buy the plywood 5 inches too big all the way around so it fits snugly but not too snug.
If you have no woodworking skills and cannot even cut a straight line, most hardware stores will do the cutting for you free of charge - just tell them what sizes you need.
The type of wood you choose is up to you for decorating purposes but keep the weather in mind when choosing so you do not need to replace it every week.
Step 3 - Measure, Mark, and Cut
Use a pencil and a tape measure to measure out how long you need your cover to be. Mark the spot. Next measure how tall you need the pool pump cover to be and mark that spot too. You should have a large rectangular shape. Cut this out with your saw. This will be the back.
Next measure how wide you need the cover to be. Measure and cut your wood. This will be the roof of your pool cover.
Take the height of the pool cover and the width of it and make two separate cuts for the sides.
Step 4 - Put it Together
The next part is to put the pieces together. We are basically building a box with two open sides, so start with one of the long pieces and one of the short pieces and nail them together so that the smaller piece lines up with the area you cut it to fit. Do the same for both side pieces then set the last piece on top and nail it to the others you should have a box that is open on the ground and slides into place over your pool pump.
Step 5 - Sealant
The last thing you will need to do is paint your new pool pump cover with a good brand of sealant to protect it. You can use a wood varnish also to make it the color you want it so that it blends into your landscaping.
