How to Build a Suspended-Shelf Pot Rack
If your pots, pans and other kitchen utensils are left anywhere because of a lack of space, it could be a good idea to build a suspended-shelf pot rack. This kind of pot rack allows you not only to hang your utensils, but also to put some utensils on top of it. To build it yourself isn’t so difficult and it will save you a lot of money. Once finished, your kitchen will have a fancy and modern touch.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- 3/4 inch lumber or medium density fiberboard
- Brad nails
- Saw
- Hammer
- Sandpaper
- Primer
- Paint
- L-brackets
- S-hooks
- Two metal grates from barbeque grill (the wider the better)
Step 1 - Cut the Frame
For the pot rack, you need a rectangular frame. Use a saw to cut the lumber. If you don’t feel comfortable handling a saw, ask someone to help you or order cut-to-size pieces. In one of the following steps, you’ll have to paint the pot rack; if you don’t like painted wood, buy fiberboard pieces covered with a melamine coat instead. Cut the 4 main pieces 3 inches wide. The ones for the frame length can be 1 1/2 inches longer than twice the grates’ length, but you can cut them shorter than that. If so, you’ll need to cut one grate using a metal cutoff saw so that both grates fit correctly into the frame. The pieces for the frame width will be 1 1/2 inches longer than the grates’ width. You’ll need to cut another 2 pieces 1 1/2 inches wide. The length will be 1 1/2 inches shorter than the pieces cut for the frame length. These will support the metal grates.
Step 2 - Assemble the Pot Rack
Before nailing the frame pieces, put them together and place a grate inside. The grate width should fit well. After checking that the measurement is correct, nail the pieces together using a hammer. Then, put one of the shelf supporting pieces inside along the frame. Both the frame side and the piece must be together. Nail the piece and repeat the process for the other one.
Step 3 - Paint the Pot Rack
Sandpaper the pot rack and then add a layer of primer. After that, paint it with the desired color.
Step 4 - Set the Grates into the Frame
Once the pot rack is dry, set the grates over the supporting pieces of the rack. Trim one grate if needed.
Step 5 - Hang S-hooks
Hang as many S-hooks as you need for your pots, pans, and utensils on the metal.
Step 6 - Fix the Brackets to the Wall
Use a pencil to make a mark on the wall for each bracket at the height where you want to install the pot rack. Make sure the marks are at the same level. After that, nail the L-brackets over the marks with a hammer.
Step 7 - Install the Pot Rack
Now you can attach the suspended-shelf pot rack to the brackets you attached to the wall. Finally, all of your kitchen utensils will be at hand.
