Installing a wood fence is a great way of keeping your privacy, but a wood fence with a gate can allow you to invite people into your garden without having to have them traipsing all over your house. If you have a pet such as a dog, then adding a gate to your wood fence is also the ideal way of allowing them the freedom of the garden, while still keeping them in an enclosed space. Adding a gate to your wooden fence is one way of ensuring that you get the best of both worlds, allowing both privacy and freedom.

Step 1 - Measure your Area

Before you start spending money on unsuitable gates or fences, it is a good idea to measure around the area where you want the fence to be. This will give you a rough idea of how much room you would like. Look in catalogs, and check the length and size of the gate that you would like to use in your wooden fence. You could then go outside, and mark out the position of the fence and posts using stones. Place the gate in different locations until you are sure that you know where you want to place your gate. Then you can make your purchases, and lay them out on the ground nearby.

Step 2 - Fitting the Posts

The first thing that you will need to do is install the fence posts. Take the first post, and dig a suitable hole for it. You can use a post hole digger, which is a kind of shovel, in order to remove a suitable amount of earth. Bring on the first pole, and place it into the hole. You can have a friend support it while you pour in concrete. Repeat until you have installed all the posts except the gate posts.

Step 3 - Fitting the Gate

You can then proceed to fitting the gate. Take your two gate posts, and position them next to the wooden fence posts. Make the hole in the same way as before, and insert your gate posts. Add concrete and leave to dry. When they are dry and secure, take your gate, and screw the nails on the hinge into one of the gate posts. Add the clasp on the other side, whichever way you would like the clasp to be.

Step 4 - Add the Panels

Now that you have finished installing your wooden fence gate, you can fit the wooden fence panels. Nail each of the panels into position on the posts, and then make sure that it is all level by using a spirit level. When you have completed all the posts, add some more concrete to the post holes to secure them, and then leave both panels and gate to settle into position.
