How to Build Corner Wall Shelves
Corner wall shelves are a great way to take advantage of a space that would not be otherwise used, or may require custom made furniture. There are several inexpensive ways you can build shelves at home, but if you want to avoid complex construction designs, you can simply choose triangular shelves and attach the shelves to the wall.
Step 1 -- Measure the Wall
Measure the wall and establish the size of the shelves you want. The shelves may have either a triangular shape or a rectangular shape with the tip cut off (obtaining a shape with 5 angles of which one is a 90 degree angle). The easiest to build are the triangular shelves.
Step 2 -- Cut the Plywood
Cut the plywood into a triangle with a 90 degree angle, employing a circular saw. Use a protractor to measure the angle and cut accordingly. Cut as many shelves as you want to hang. Alternatively, get a circular piece of plywood and cut it into 4 equal shapes. This will ensure that you obtain a 90 degree angle for each of the shapes.
Step 3 – Sand and Paint the Shelves
Sand the shelves using a rough grit sandpaper (e.g. 80 grit) and a sander. Prepare the area for painting with a finer grit sandpaper. Paint the shelves before you install them on the wall. Use a primer for more resistant paint and finish with a varnish. Make sure the shelves are dry when you install them, so allow to dry overnight.
Step 4 -- Mark the Wall
Mark the points where you want to hang the shelves, and draw a straight line on each wall that makes up the corner. Use a level to ensure that the lines are straight. The shelves can be placed at equal distances one from the other, or variable distances according to your needs and the items you plan to place on them.
Step 5 – Install the Brackets
Install the top shelf brackets first. Use 2 brackets for each shelf, but make sure these won’t intersect. Mark the points where you have to drill holes for the brackets. Drill holes and insert the plastic anchors. Align the holes in the brackets with the holes in the anchor. Use a screwdriver or a drill to install the brackets. Insert screws in the anchors and tighten them. Do the same with the brackets for each shelf you choose to install.
Step 6 – Install the Shelves
Put the plywood shelves on the brackets on the wall. Insert 1/2-inch screws on the bottom part of the plywood, through the holes in the brackets. Check if the shelves are secure enough.
