Glass bifold doors are a very functional and attractive type of door that can be used in various places throughout the home. Bifold doors are ideal for dividing rooms, as wardrobe doors or even as external doors in some cases. Glass bifold doors are fantastic for many reasons.
Building your own glass bifold doors isn't very difficult. If you have the right tools and materials required then you should be able to build a glass bifold door over the course of a single weekend.
Planning and Designing
The first thing that you need to do is to plan your bifold door. It's important to realize that the glass bifold doors should be made using a wooden frame with a glass panel insert. Alternatively, several smaller panes of glass can be used depending on the design you are trying to accomplish.
Design your glass bifold doors on a piece of paper and carefully plan the correct size of the doors. Make sure that the doors are all equal-sized and that they will open properly.
Cutting the Frame
First, you will need to mark and cut the frame. A frame will be made up of four different sections of wood. These all need to be cut at a 45-degree angle which will allow them to fit snugly together. Before cutting the frame make sure you mark the sections with a pencil and set square.
Once the frame is marked using a miter circular saw to cut the wood at 45-degree angles.
Assembling the Frame
Now you need to assemble all of the frames together. Screw or nail each of these panels of wood together to create a sturdy frame. You can also apply some wood glue to create an even stronger bond if you prefer. Assembling the frame is an important step, it's also very important that you ensure that the frames are square.
Purchasing the Glass
You will now need to purchase the glass to fit inside your doors. Although it is possible to cut the glass yourself, this isn't very easy. You will find it much easier to purchase the glass which is already cut to shape. A local glass workshop will be able to help provide you with the glass you require.
Fixing the Glass
Now you need to fix the glass into the door frame. This is a very easy thing to do and you will need to use a beading to secure the glass into the frame. Hammer the beading into the window frame so that the glass cannot fall out, this needs to be done using two pieces of beading on either side of the glass
Finishing Touches
Next, you will need to paint or stain the wooden frame of the bifold glass doors. Painting these doors will make it possible to make the doors look much better. After the tracks have been fixed onto the ceiling and floor you can then install the glass bifold doors into the tracks.
