How to Build Planters with Landscape Blocks

What You'll Need
Tape measure
Rope or hose
Hammer and chisel

If you want to create planters in your garden by using a landscape block or two, this is a rather easy project to do on a weekend or whenever you have free time. Here's how you can build a raised garden bed with landscape blocks.

Step 1 - Locate the Site

Find the location where you want to place the garden. Make sure it has enough sun for the type of plants you want to grow. For example, some plants need full sun while perennials and annuals need different light depending on the varieties you plant.

Prepare the design of the garden ahead of time by using a hose or rope to section off the area. You can use landscape blocks to create a casual look or a more formal one. You may have to navigate around tree roots if a tree is going to be part of the garden. Leave enough space to be able to reach the flowerbed when you are gardening and planting. Two feet should be sufficient.

Figure out what the circumference is around the garden bed. Measure the length of the hose or rope with a tape measure to figure out the numbers. Also, decide how high you want the garden to be.

Step 2 - Shopping

When you go to buy the landscape blocks at a home improvement store, make sure you bring the measurements so you know how much to buy. Landscape blocks are available in a wide variety of different colors and textures. Smaller ones are easier to work with and don't weigh very much. The landscape blocks that have guide bumps on them are easier to assemble. Landscape blocks with a matching capstone on top are very beautiful and add a unique touch to a garden bed.

Color is also very important. Try to choose a color that blends in with the surroundings in your yard. When the landscape blocks are delivered to your home, make sure they are placed close to the garden. This will make it easier to reach them when you're putting together the flowerbed.

Step 3 - Build the Garden bed

Level the ground before you start by using a two-by-four and a level. Before digging, lay the blocks on the ground so that you know how to adjust them. Use chalk to draw a line indicating where you want the landscape blocks to go. Cut the landscape blocks with a chisel and hammer if you need to create distinct corners or ends.

Place landscape cloth on the blocks so nothing falls through the cracks. Add garden soil to the flowerbed. You can even create stepping stones and stairs if you want to make getting around the garden easier. Landscape blocks are easy to use for creating a beautiful garden bed. Stacking the blocks together is a simple process that anyone can do.

Most homeowners take a few weekends for this type of project, depending on the size of the garden bed.

Once you select the type of blocks you want for your garden, all you have to do is purchase the blocks and have them delivered to your home. Before you know it, you'll have a gorgeous garden bed full of beautiful flowers and shrubs.
