Foam paintbrush

Portable room dividers are some of the most widely used types of room dividers. This is because unlike other types of dividers, portable styles one can be moved from one place to another without having to worry about installations on the floor or ceiling. Follow the simple steps below to make your own movable room divider.

Step 1 - Buy the Materials

Most of the materials you will need for this project can be purchased from a home improvement store. You can easily find the hollow-core doors, which look like door panels minus the precut hole for the doorknob. These doors come in 80 or 96 inches in height and 24, 30 or 36 inches in width. Choose doors of the same size.

After you are done buying the doors, you can now proceed to buying all the other materials and equipment. If you do not have a screwdriver yet, consider buying one that is battery-operated as it is easier to use.

Step 2 - Prepare the Hollow-Core Doors

Sand the door sections before installing hardware. If the doors are made of medium-density fiberboard, you can skip sanding. Coat the doors with paint on the front and back surfaces as well as the sides and edges. Let it dry.

Step 3 - Assemble and Install Hardware

Place 2 hinges on the first door and screw into position. Screw another hinge on the bottom part of the panel. Lay the second door panel to the first one. Make sure to line the two evenly. Use your pencil to mark the hinge holes on the second panel.

Go on to attach the hinge on the second panel. You can add the hinge on the third panel using the same procedures. See to it that hinges on panel one folds to the left, the hinges on the second panel folds to the right. This way, the divider can stand on its own.

Step 4 - Put the Panels Together

Screw all the hinges to the other panel. Make sure that you screw the panels together snugly so that they won’t break apart easily.

Step 5 - Decorate

You can use plain color for the panels, or you can be more creative. You can paint each side with a different color or paint a mural on both sides. For example, if you are going to put the divider between the kitchen and dining room, the panels facing the kitchen can be painted with a basket of fruits while the panel on the side of the dining room will be painted with bread and wine. You may also hang posters, photographs or any other artwork on the panel to make it look more interesting. If you like, you can attack fabric or curtains to the panels for more interest.

Room dividers serve many purposes other than breaking up sections of a room. They are also used as to decorate and beautify a space as well as to provide privacy.
