How to Build Roll-out Drawers

Roll out drawers are one of the most useful furniture in any home. Roll out drawers can be a useful component in the kitchen. They can be also used in a bedroom to store different items. A drawer can be built rather simply, without much skill or time. Here are a few simple instructions:
Step 1 – Take the Measurement
Measure the overall width of the cabinet using a measuring tape or scale. Cut your plywood by subtracting around 2 ½ inches from this measurement. Use a saw to cut two sides for each drawer. The measurement should be around 22 inches by 3 ½ inches. The bottom of the drawer should be around 22 inches. Ensure that the drawer slides fit the size of the cabinets accurately.
Step 2 - Assemble the Drawer
Assemble the drawers using wood glue. Apply glue to all the four sides of the drawer. The corners of the drawers should be square shaped so that they fit accurately into the cabinets. Repeat the procedure for attaching the bottom of the drawer. Attach the drawer portion of the slide using screws or nails to each side of the drawer. It should be ¼ inch away from the bottom of the drawer.
Step 3 – Cut the Scrap Lumber
Cut around ¼ inch pine lumber into 22-inch lengths using a saw with a sharp edge. Mount the drawer slide onto the carrier pieces. Around ¼ inch of plywood would be needed to fit the base of the carrier. Do not glue this piece to the base of the carrier. Check if the drawer goes easily into the carrier.
Step 4 - Sanding
Sand the drawer with sandpaper and apply polyurethane to the drawers. Polyurethane will provide your drawers with an attractive and shiny look.
Step 5 - Place the Carrier
Put the carrier into the cabinet and with a measuring tape, measure the gap between the other sides by tilting the carrier to one side. Cut six spacer strips by dividing this measurement into half. Check if it fits accurately and adjust accordingly. Fix the carrier assembly and spacers together by drilling holes into the carriers and spacers. Join the drawer carrier assembly in the cabinets using screws. Place the drawer in the slides. Do away with the carrier base if not required.
