How to Build Surfboard Wall Racks

If you love to surf but hate that your boards take up so much space, surfboard wall racks are the solution. By following a few simple steps, you can build your own, and at an affordable cost.
Drill the Holes
Mark and drill the holes on the 2-by-4. With your ruler, find and mark the center of your board at the top, bottom, and middle. Next, line up the straight edge with your marks and make a pencil mark every 12 to 14 inches. Once you have marked the entire length of the board, drill your holes with a bit the same size as your dowels. Try to make the holes as uniform as possible. The holes should be about ¾ of an inch deep.
Attach Dowels
For each hole that you made in the wood, you will need a 24-inch dowel. You can buy them pre-cut or carefully cut your own using your chop saw. Once you have all of your dowels ready, it is time to attach them. Put wood glue at one end of your dowel and push it into a hole. Repeat this with all your dowels. The dowels should fit snuggly into their holes. Allow the wood glue to dry.
Complete Assembly
Next, use your drill to put pilot holes in each dowel. The holes should be small, and there should be one at the end of each dowel. Screw an eye into each hole, making sure it is snug. Cut pieces of nylon string to connect to the eyes. Each piece of string should be a little longer than the distance between dowels. Securely tie hooks to the ends of your strings. By hooking the string into two neighboring eyes, you will keep the boards in place. Next, use pipe insulation to pad the dowels by wrapping it around each dowel. Secure them with zip ties.
Mounting Rack
The surfboard wall racks need to be mounted into studs. Locate the studs with a stud finder and mark their locations. You need two people to hold the rack against the wall while you adjust the height and level the rack. While your helpers continue to hold the rack, screw it into the studs and ensure it is secure. Once your rack is mounted, cut a scrap of shaggy carpet the size of the space below the rack and place it there. Don’t forget to personalize your rack with stickers or other touches.
