How to Build Vanity Bathroom Base Cabinets

Bathroom base cabinets do not only offer additional storage for your bath essentials; they also serve as a beautiful accent to the bathroom. You can hire a carpenter to make a bathroom cabinet for you, or you can build one yourself. Creating a cabinet is not difficult, just follow the procedure below:

Step 1 – Plan the Cabinet Size

Base the size of the bathroom cabinet you’re going to make according to the dimensions of your bathroom. The standard cabinet size is 34 1/2 by 14 and 1/4 by 36 and 1/4. This is the size that is used in this guide.

Step 2 – Make the Two Side Panels

Use a measuring tape to measure a 34 1/2 inches by 17 1/4 inches board on a 3/4 inch plywood sheet. Repeat these steps to make another panel. Then, cut out the plywood sheet with a table saw.

Step 3 – Make the Back Panel and Bottom Panel

Measure a 34 1/2 by 35 1/4 inch board on a 1/2 inch plywood sheet for the back panel of the cabinet. Cut this out with a table saw.

For the bottom panel, measure a 16 3/4 by 35 1/4 inch board on a 3/4 inch plywood, and cut it with a table saw.

Step 4 – Make 2 Cabinet Supports

Measure 2, 34 1/2 inches on a 1 by 3 board, and cut them out with a table saw.

Step 5 – Make a Groove on the Side Panels

Line the side panels 3 inches from the bottom. Attach a dado blade on the table saw, and adjust the saw to about 1/4 inches high. Use the dado blade to cut the side panels, using the mark as guide.

Step 6 – Connect the Bottom Panel to the Side Panels

Attach the bottom panel into the grooves of the side panels with wood glue. Place a clamp between the panels, and secure them with finishing nails. Remove the clamp.

Step 7 – Install the Back Panel and Cabinet Top

Apply wood glue around the frame where the back panel is going to be attached. Then, stick the back panel on the frame, and hold them with a clamp. Secure the back panel with finishing nails.

Put 1 by 3 boards on top of the cabinet, and secure them with nails.

Step 8 – Cut the Pieces for the Face Frame

Use the table saw to cut 1 by 3 oak boards into 4 wood pieces each measuring 14 3/8 inches in length, but with different widths. One of the pieces should be 31 1/4 inches, while another one should be 16 1/2 inches. The 2 other wood pieces should have a width of 34 1/4 inches. Then, use the table saw to cut 31 1/4 inches from a 1 by 6 oak board.

Step 9 – Make the Face Frame

Construct the face frame of the cabinet by placing the 31 1/4 inches oak board on a flat surface. Put the two 34 1/4 inches boards on its sides. Put the 31 1/4 inch board about 10 inches on the 1 by 6 board. Place one 14 3/8 inch board about 5 3/4 inches on a 1 by 3 board. Place the 14 3/8 inch and 16 1/2 inch 1 by 3 board perpendicular to each other. Assemble the remaining 1 by 3 boards on the face frame. Secure the boards together with screws.

Step 10 – Complete the Cabinet

Attach the face frame of the cabinet using finishing nails, and install a sink on the cabinet.
