How to Build Your Own Go Kart Torque Converter
The go kart torque converter acts as the automatic transmission of your go-kart. It is a type of fluid coupling which permits the engine to spin separately from the transmission. To build your own go-kart torque converter, you must understand how the engine works. When the engine is running slowly, which normally happens when the go-kart is avoiding ditches, the total torque that passes through the torque converter is very small. This means that keeping the go-kart would require only a substantial amount of effort on the break pedal. When the gas pedal is pressed when the kart is not in motion, you will then have to press more on the brake to keep the wheels from turning for the kart to move. Here are the steps in creating your own torque converter for your go-kart:
Step 1 – Bolt the Converter
Bolt the torque converter housing to the go-kart engine. This will result to the turning of the torque converter at whatever speed the engine is going.
Step 2 – Attach the Fin
Attach the fins that make up the pump of the torque converter to the housing; this is so that the fins that make up the pump of the torque converter turn at the same speed as the engine. The pump attached inside a torque converter is a type of centrifugal pump. The fluid is thrown around to the outside similar to the spin cycle of a washing machine as it throws around water and clothes to the outside of the wash tub. A vacuum is created that draws more fluid in at the center as fluid is thrown around to the outside.
Step 3 – Connect the Turbine
Connect the turbine to the transmission. The fluid that enters the blade of the turbine will cause it to spin which basically will make your go-kart move.
Step 4 – Bolt the Stator
The stator is bolted to the very center of the torque converter. This is essential because its redirects the fluid returning from the turbine before it hits the pump once again. This allows the torque converter to be very efficient. One of the important feature of the stator is that it has a very aggressive blade design. This blade design almost fully drives backward the course of the fluid. Inside the stator is a one-way clutch that links the stator to a shaft that is fixed in the transmission.
